Have a backup plan for life-sustaining equipment
If you or someone in your family requires powered life support equipment, have a backup plan in case the power goes out.
Be prepared
Power outages can occur any time. Keep flashlights, extra batteries, bottled water and a fully charged phone ready.
Use generators safely
Never operate generators indoors or in enclosed spaces. Keep them outside and away from windows, doors and vents to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed
Minimize opening doors to help food stay cold longer. A full freezer can keep food frozen for up to 48 hours if left unopened.
Unplug sensitive electronics
Protect TVs, computers and other electronics from potential power surges by unplugging them. Leave one light on so you’ll know when power has been restored.
Power lines and vehicles
If a line falls on your car, drive away if you can do so safely. If you can’t, stay inside until trained help arrives.
If you must get out, jump from the vehicle. DO NOT touch the vehicle and ground at the same time. Shuffle with your legs close together to move away from the vehicle. If you have a young child or infant in the vehicle with you, hold them tight to your body while you hop from the vehicle, then shuffle away.
