The 54th annual Wisconsin River Canoe & Kayak Race will be held on Sunday, July 14th, with races for paddlers with a variety of skill levels. The finish line will be at Victora Riverside Park in Muscoda where the Lions Club will serve food and refreshments. Races will begin from Spring Green, Lone Rock and Gotham. Event co-sponsors are the Wisconsin Canoe Racing Association and the Avoca-Blue River-Muscoda Lions Club.
In addition to the highly competitive long races, the Muscoda Lions Challenge features a special race for area service club members, but it is with aluminum canoes only. The Lions Challenge takes place on the 8-mile course from Gotham to Muscoda. Pete and Cindy Bremmer are donating use of canoes for paddlers who do not have access to an aluminum canoe. Online pre-registration is recommended. The Gotham race will begin with check-in starting at 10:00 a.m. and race time at 11:00. Teams needing to reserve an aluminum canoe should call Mark Cupp at (608) 739-2179 and mention the Lions Challenge.
Cupp said spectators are invited to cheer on the racers as they cross the finish line at Muscoda. Action at the finish line downstream of the boat landing will begin about noon and conclude by 1:00. The Lions Club will serve a delicious pork loin dinner prepared by Chef Michael Ernst. The cost of the meal will be $10 and will be served from the shelter east of the Veterans Memorial from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. Cold beverages also will be available. Muscoda EMS will be on hand to offer blood pressure screenings and stroke awareness tips. Proceeds from the food stand will support Lions Club donations to rescue squads in Avoca, Blue River and Muscoda and other local projects, such as improvements to Victora Riverside Park.
